Two hours and fifty-three minutes, $250 million in budget, $1.45 billion worldwide at the box office — these numbers are just the surface. What truly lingers after you leave the theater is how Nolan, through his signature nonlinear narrative, tears open questions from a three-thousand-year-old story that still burn today: **The cost of war. The courage to go home. And whether a mortal should defy fate.** > *"Defy the gods."* > — Odysseus This tagline is the spiritual spine of the entire film. ## War Is Not Glory — It's a Brand Nolan doesn't frame the Trojan War as a heroic triumph. He points the camera at a man who walked out of war and lets him speak for himself: > *"When he left the belly of the horse and opened the gates of Troy, he saw ten years of rage pour into that city in one night. We left them a gift in offering of peace that they took into their home… We violated all that's ever sacred between people… and turned the fight into a hunt. To burn the walls of Troy was to burn the world entire. Including his home."* When these words leave Matt Damon's Odysseus, the theater falls terrifyingly silent. Nolan reinterprets the Trojan Horse — it's no longer a symbol of Greek ingenuity, but a parable about **the systematic destruction of trust**. The Greeks offered a gift in the name of peace; the Trojans received it with hospitality. Then a gate opened, and ten years of war ended in a single night in the cruelest way imaginable. > *"One man's idea, one man's trick… to break Zeus's Law forever. We lived in a world of palaces, trades, language, blind to its beauty… until we broke it."* This is the film's deepest fear — **civilization doesn't need an enemy to collapse. It just needs one sufficiently clever lie.** Odysseus, having lived through war, no longer believes in heroic narratives. He's exhausted, guilt-ridden, haunted by the atrocities he participated in. Nolan transforms an ancient Greek hero into a modern understanding of PTSD — this isn't innovation, it's restoration. Homer wrote about a man who didn't want to go home. ## The Sirens' Song: What You Want Most Is What You Can't Have The most suffocating passage in the film is Odysseus describing the Sirens' song. It's not just dialogue — it's practically a prose poem about the nature of human desire: > *"All the things you wanted to be and then all the things you wished you never wished for. It was a delicious itch you want to scratch but you find it under the skin and can't reach it… It told you what you most want is what you most can't have and that the most you can't have is what you already had and lost. It was a song of all the promises I failed to keep. And it told me I don't really want to go home."* This passage deserves to be read again and again. It's not just about Odysseus and Ithaca — it's about every one of us, and the most contradictory truth buried deep within: **the things we chase desperately are often the things we fail to cherish when we have them; and when we truly lose them, we discover those were the only things we ever wanted.** What's even more devastating is the final line: *"I don't really want to go home."* Not that he can't — he *doesn't dare*. Because he's no longer the person who left. Going home means facing his real self, not the self shaped by war and legend. ## Calypso's Advice: Surrender Control to Survive Charlize Theron's Calypso delivers the film's most philosophically profound passage: > *"You're a man who needs to control his fate. But you cannot control this. You must give yourself to the storm, give yourself to Poseidon, and take your punishment. Give up the fight, give up control and live. It is a leap of faith you haven't yet made, Odysseus."* A "leap of faith" — a theme that recurs across all of Nolan's films. From the moment Cobb in *Inception* isn't sure if his wife is real, to Cooper's plunge into the black hole in *Interstellar*, Nolan keeps asking the same question: **when reason reaches its limit, do you dare to jump?** Calypso isn't advocating surrender. She's describing a higher form of courage — the admission of one's own limits. Odysseus spent his life using wit and stratagem against fate, but some things can't be won through cleverness. Poseidon's wrath can't be outwitted with a wooden horse. This wisdom holds just as true in modern life. Our generation was taught to control everything — grades, careers, the rhythm of life. But life always holds variables you can't calculate — illness, loss, the unexpected. Calypso's wisdom: **sometimes the act of surviving itself is the greatest rebellion.** ## Penelope: Twenty Years on an Empty Throne Anne Hathaway's Penelope is the film's most underrated character. When someone questions her right to sit on the throne, she fires back: > *"Because only a man can sit on it? Empty throne? I've been sitting on that empty throne for twenty years! My knowledge, my years of experience, that's all nothing compared to the bristles on your chin!"* The line draws laughter in the theater, but behind the laughter is heartbreak. Twenty years — a woman holding a kingdom together alone, fending off countless suitors, protecting her family and dignity — and the deepest contempt she faces isn't violence. It's the casual, assumed dismissal. Even more devastating is this: > *"In this world, a man does what he chooses. I do what I can."* No complaint, no indictment — just a statement of fact delivered with a calm so残酷 it cuts. Nolan doesn't portray Penelope as a "faithful symbol" waiting for her husband's return. She's a person with agency, living in a world that refuses to grant her any, finding her own way through. ## Nonlinear Time, and What "Home" Really Means Nolan's signature nonlinear narrative finds its perfect vessel in this film. Homer's original text was itself a temporally fractured work — Odysseus drifts at sea while remembering Troy; Penelope waits in Ithaca while weaving and unraveling memory. Nolan translates this structure into visual language: past and present interweave constantly, the atrocities of war bleeding into the longing for home. This is exactly **how memory itself operates**. No one remembers their past linearly — a song, a scent, a single instant can yank us back a decade. Nolan said he wanted to explore "the nonlinear experience of memory," and in doing so, he arrives at a deeper truth: **Home isn't a geographic coordinate. It's a state you can only reach after making peace with yourself.** Odysseus's tragedy isn't that he can't find the road — it's that he's no longer sure he wants to. He fears that when he arrives, the person he once was will already be dead. ## The Ending: A New Dawn The film's final two lines could stand alone as a poem: > *"Civilization will rise again."* > — Penelope > *"A new dawn will break over the darkened world. And our mistakes will once again be forgotten. Because songs will be all they have to remember those of us who could write."* > — Odysseus Nolan makes an incredibly bold adaptation here: Odysseus doesn't return to Ithaca to slay the suitors, as in the original. Instead, he chooses **exile** — walking with Penelope into the unknown West. This ending frustrated many purists, but I believe it's the film's most profound stroke. Because what Nolan is really saying isn't about "going home" — it's about **"when you're no longer the person who left, does going home still mean anything?"** Odysseus's choice isn't escape — it's a more radical honesty. He knows he carries too much that can't be brought back to Ithaca, and Penelope understands this. Two people walking together into the unknown — that in itself is a braver choice than "returning to how things were." *"Because songs will be all they have to remember those of us who could write."* — This is the film's ultimate echo. It says: **all civilization, all memory, eventually becomes a song. And a song's meaning lies not in whether it's faithful to the facts, but in whether it lets those who come after know that someone once lived this way.** ## Is It Worth Watching? 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, 88 on Metacritic, an A CinemaScore — by the numbers, this is Nolan's highest-rated film and the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. But numbers aren't the whole story. Some audiences say, "I walked out of the theater shaking, and I didn't realize I'd been crying." Others say, "I walked out feeling nothing." This polarization itself reveals something: **this film demands that you bring something of yourself when you walk in.** If you're just after visual spectacle, the IMAX cinematography and Ludwig Göransson's score alone are worth the ticket. But if you're willing to let those lines hit you — about the cost of war, the fear of going home, the struggle between mortals and fate — then after the credits roll, you might need to sit alone in silence for a while. Nolan turned a three-thousand-year-old story into a parable that still works in 2026. **Because some questions humanity has never answered — and the value of cinema isn't in providing answers, but in asking the questions deeply enough.** > *"Then I defy the gods."* > — Odysseus He said it. Nolan said it through the entire film. And perhaps it's something each of us, at certain moments, has to say to ourselves. --- *Film dialogue sourced from Wikiquote's "The Odyssey (2026 film)" entry. Sitting in the defendant's seat is every girl who refuses to live according to a standardized template. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On August 18, 2026, a girl from Chaoshan named Chen Nuo posted a video on Bilibili. She had been guaranteed admission to Central South University, had blue hair, and was smiling brightly. The video received 3.19 million views and 1,109 danmaku comments. The comment section quickly went off the rails. "Capital manipulation." "Her family must have connections." "Someone with hair like that can get guaranteed admission?" More than three million people gathered to watch a girl's admission story, yet no one cared how many years she had spent studying Spanish. Everyone was discussing the color of her hair. Three years earlier, another girl had walked down exactly the same road. ## The Same Verdict, a Different Defendant In July 2022, Zhejiang Normal University graduate Zheng Linghua posted a photo on social media. She had dyed her hair pink and was taking a picture with her grandfather in a hospital bed. It was a joyful photo: she had been admitted to East China Normal University through a recommendation program and wanted to make her grandfather happy too. Then the hunt began. "Bar hostess." "Improper." "Someone like her deserves to study for a graduate degree?" Zheng Linghua's pink hair became her entire evidence of guilt. She spent more than half a year defending herself, collecting evidence, and filing lawsuits. On January 23, 2023, she was gone. She was 24. Three years later, Chen Nuo's blue hair became the new object of judgment. The accusation had changed from "bar hostess" to "capital manipulation," but the underlying logic had not: **your appearance does not fit my image of what a good student should look like, so there must be something shady about your achievements.** One danmaku comment read: "Reminds me of that red-haired girl who got into graduate school and was cyberbullied." Another said: "We can't let Zheng Linghua's tragedy happen again." The spectators have not forgotten. They remember what happened three years ago, yet they are still doing the same thing. ## "Capital Manipulation": A Universal Label The phrase "capital manipulation" appeared with suspicious frequency. But what exactly was it supposed to mean? Chen Nuo entered Central South University through a foreign-language recommendation pathway. This route has barriers to entry: selection by foreign-language schools, internal rankings, and language proficiency tests. You actually have to know how to speak Spanish. This is not something some mysterious "capital" can easily manipulate. But the skeptics do not need to understand any of that. They need an explanation, something that makes their jealousy or discomfort feel justified. "Capital manipulation" here is not an evidence-based accusation. It is a psychological defense mechanism. It means: she could not possibly have achieved this on her own; someone must have helped her behind the scenes. This way of thinking has a name: **conspiracy theory**. The core of conspiracy thinking is not the pursuit of truth, but the denial of differences in ability. When someone cannot accept that another person is simply better than them, conspiracy theory provides an escape hatch: she isn't that good; someone is helping her. From "bar hostess" to "capital manipulation," the weapon has evolved from personal humiliation into an attack on institutions and systems. The motivation, however, remains the same: denying someone's achievements is easier than admitting your own mediocrity. ## The Gender Politics of Hair-Color Judgment There is one detail worth noticing: the targets of these judgments are almost always girls. There are plenty of boys with blue hair. Plenty of boys dye their hair pink, too. Yet you rarely see a boy questioned with, "How do you deserve guaranteed admission?" Hair-color judgment keeps happening to girls, not because girls are more likely to dye their hair, but because women's appearances have always been treated as public property to be regulated. A girl's hair is supposed to be black, neat, and compatible with the image of a "proper student." Dye it blue, and suddenly you are "challenging public aesthetics," "not studying properly," or "failing to appreciate your educational opportunities." The implication underneath all of this is: your appearance does not belong to you. It belongs to society. Zheng Linghua was subjected to sexual rumors because "pink hair = improper." Chen Nuo was accused of "capital manipulation" because "blue hair = not serious about her studies." The logic of the attacks is different, but the premise is the same: a girl does not deserve to appear in public on her own terms. ## Deindividuation: The Mask Behind the Screen Psychology has a concept called **deindividuation**. When people are hidden within a group and do not have to face the consequences under their real identities, moral restraints can drop sharply. The internet is fertile ground for deindividuation. Behind a screen, using a username, you type "capital manipulation" at a girl you have never met. You do not have to look into her eyes, face her anger, or bear any visible consequences for your words. You do not even have to admit that you were the one who wrote it. You can switch accounts and post another comment. Psychologist John Suler proposed six factors behind the "online disinhibition effect": anonymity, invisibility, asynchronicity, solipsistic introjection, dissociative imagination, and the perception that "this is just a virtual world." These factors can all operate simultaneously on social media. Someone who might be gentle and courteous in real life can calmly type "Someone like her deserves to study for a graduate degree?" in a comment section. It is not necessarily because they have become a different person. The screen has simply removed their social mask. In 2024, CCTV interviewed one of the people who had participated in the cyberbullying of Zheng Linghua. His name was Wang Yin. Facing the camera, he said: "The cause and effect of this matter had nothing directly to do with me." Everyone felt that they had only "said one thing," so no one felt that they needed to apologize. Ten thousand people saying "it had nothing directly to do with me" created a crime scene in which no one was responsible. ## The Algorithm's Complicity Deindividuation explains why individuals dare to attack. It does not explain why the attacks get amplified. The recommendation systems of social media in 2026 are essentially **anger-extraction machines**. Their goal is to keep you on the platform longer, make you click more, and encourage more heated engagement. Calm analysis cannot do that. Rational discussion cannot do that. Conflict, polarization, and moral judgment can. When Chen Nuo's blue-hair video was marked as "high-engagement content," the algorithm did not care whether the engagement was positive or negative. It only knew that the comment section was active, there were many danmaku comments, and people were sharing it. So it pushed the video to more people, including those most likely to become angry. Platforms do not have to actively create cyberbullying. They only need to push the most conflict-generating content toward audiences most susceptible to outrage. **Anger is the fuel of traffic, and algorithms are the match that lights it.** Researchers in communication have conducted experiments showing that posts containing moral outrage can spread several times faster than neutral content. Algorithms faithfully exploit this pattern. So when comments saying "capital manipulation" appear, the platform does not necessarily suppress them. Instead, they may receive even more distribution because they generate more replies, more arguments, and more time spent on the platform. **The commercial logic of platforms and the propagation logic of cyberbullying are structurally aligned at their core.** ## From Spectating to Execution With anonymous masks and algorithmic amplification, a cyberbullying campaign needs only one final step: moving from spectatorship to execution. Stanley Milgram conducted a classic experiment. A person was instructed to administer electric shocks to another person. If he was alone in the room, he would hesitate and often refuse. But when other "confederates" continued to pressure him, the compliance rate rose to 65%. The escalation of cyberbullying almost replicates this experiment. Someone posts a skeptical comment. More people follow, creating an atmosphere of "everyone is questioning her." Suspicion becomes certainty. "Capital manipulation" changes from speculation into "fact." Fact becomes attack: "She may have connections" becomes "She doesn't deserve this." Attack becomes doxxing, spreading from the comment section to private messages, to other platforms, and eventually into real life. At every step, participants feel that their behavior is justified because they see someone else already doing the same thing. The group provides a moral shield. What Hannah Arendt called the **"banality of evil"** has taken on a new face in the internet age: no demons, no elaborate conspiracy, no mastermind required—only a group of people who believe they are "just saying one thing," gradually pushing a girl toward the abyss under the amplification of algorithms. ## Anxiety Over Guaranteed Admission Why does "guaranteed admission" trigger such intense anger? Because it touches one of the most sensitive nerves in Chinese society: **educational fairness**. The Gaokao is widely regarded as one of the fairest channels for social mobility. Guaranteed admission naturally carries an aura of "exception." Someone can reach the same destination without crossing the same narrow bridge filled with countless competitors. This kind of exception can create anxiety in any society, but in an environment of highly constrained educational resources and pervasive anxiety about upward mobility, it becomes magnified. The accusation of "capital manipulation" gains traction not because people genuinely believe Chen Nuo's family has some mysterious capital, but because they need to believe that the guaranteed-admission system itself is unfair. If the system is fair, then it means someone managed to find a path—through ability—that you did not know existed. That can be harder to accept than believing the system is corrupt. Psychologically, this is related to the **just-world hypothesis**, or rather its reversal: when people cannot obtain the same achievements despite their own efforts, they may become inclined to believe that the world must be unfair. It is not that they were not good enough; someone else must have cheated. Conspiracy theories grow out of this psychological need. **"Capital manipulation" is not a factual judgment. It is a psychological necessity.** ## The Legal Vacuum Where is the law? After Zheng Linghua died in 2023, her family embarked on a long road to seek justice. People such as Wang Yin were sued for cyberbullying, but the outcomes were far from satisfying. Some apologized. Some paid relatively small amounts of compensation. Some have never faced meaningful legal consequences. China's legal framework for combating cyberbullying remains fragmented. The Civil Code contains provisions concerning reputation and privacy rights, while the Criminal Law includes offenses such as insult and defamation. But these provisions were primarily designed to deal with attacks between individuals, not large-scale collective harassment. When ten thousand accounts simultaneously attack one person, it is extremely difficult for the law to assign responsibility to each specific individual. More importantly, there are high evidentiary barriers. Victims of cyberbullying need to prove: the specific statements, the specific harm, and the causal relationship between them. Identifying the comments that caused substantive damage out of tens of thousands of accounts, and proving a causal chain between depression or suicide and specific acts of cyberbullying, is extraordinarily difficult. The harm caused by cyberbullying is real, and sometimes fatal. But the threshold for legal accountability is so high that almost no one can cross it. **Cyberbullying has become a form of violence with nearly zero cost: you destroy someone's life from behind an anonymous account, turn off your phone, and move on to the next video.** ## The Illusion of Justice on the Internet Everyone participating in the trial feels that they are "upholding justice." Those questioning "capital manipulation" believe they are protecting fairness. Those spreading sexual rumors believe they are "revealing the truth." Those forwarding the accusations believe they are "doing society a favor." Everyone thinks they are right. Everyone thinks they are "just saying one thing." Countless "one things" become a tsunami. Zheng Linghua was not killed by a single person. She was killed by ten thousand people who each told themselves they had "only said one thing." CCTV later interviewed one of the cyberbullies. That person said: "The cause and effect of this matter had nothing directly to do with me." Every person believed they had no responsibility, so every person could continue judging others without any burden. ## After the Verdict Chen Nuo's situation is still developing. Fortunately, this time more people have stepped forward to defend her. The call of "There will not be another Zheng Linghua" is louder than it was three years ago. Chen Nuo herself also posted a video in response: she comes from an ordinary family, she dyed her hair after receiving her admission, and her parents support her. But I am not sure how long this wave of "protection" will last. Next time, it will be another girl, another hair color, another accusation, and the judgment will begin again. The object of judgment has never really been the hair color, the capital, or the guaranteed-admission system. **The object of judgment is a person who refuses to live according to the template.** In a society where everyone is expected to fit neatly into the same mold, anyone who deviates from that template is treated as an error that needs correcting—especially when that person is a woman. Zheng Linghua proved with her life how cruel this judgment can be. Chen Nuo proves with her smile how absurd it can be. The judgment itself will not stop because of this. It will stop only when we begin asking the real question. Who gave the internet a judge's bench? ======================================================================== TITLE: How Did a 'Bad Movie' Make 100 Million? URL: https://eververdants.github.io/blog/niulai-when-bad-becomes-currency/ COLUMN: ESSAYS DATE: 2026.08.20 TAGS: [Film, Internet Culture, Attention Economy, Abstract Culture] SUMMARY: In the 2026 summer box office season, a crudely produced domestic animated film crossed the 100-million-yuan mark. On Bilibili, videos roasting it have racked up over ten times the views of serious discussions about the film itself. When "being mocked" is more profitable than "being praised," what exactly is happening in Chinese cinema? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In August 2026, a domestic animated film titled _Niu Lai_ (Here Comes the Bull) quietly hit theaters. It had no blockbuster-style marketing campaign, and calling its production quality "crude" would be an understatement. Yet it surpassed 100 million yuan at the box office—not because it was good. On Bilibili, one video roasting the film garnered 1.37 million views and 2,467 bullet comments. Meanwhile, serious discussions about the movie itself barely scraped 20,000 views. **The traffic generated by mocking it is seventy times that of discussing it.** I paused for a moment when I saw these numbers. ## A Film's "Buyer's Review" The director of _Niu Lai_, Xin Yumeng, crafted the entire film solo without any AI assistance—a feat that resulted in a theatrical-release animation with a bizarre art style and production values completely out of sync with same-period blockbusters like _Eight Immortals_. TVB News summed it up in eight characters: "crudely made, bizarre visuals." In traditional contexts, that’s essentially a death sentence. But things didn’t go according to script. In the first few days after release, scattered negative reviews began spreading across social media. Some posted questions like, “How did this get approved for a distribution license?” Others made comparison videos placing the poster next to actual footage—the gap was so wide it became laughable. Then more people flocked to theaters, not out of curiosity about whether it was good, but to see just how bad it really was. By August 16, cumulative ticket sales had crossed 5 million yuan, landing it in the top 10 domestic animated films of 2026. Around August 19, it broke the 100-million-yuan barrier. A film universally panned as “the worst ever” had become the summer season’s biggest dark horse. ## The Economics of Bad Films There’s something counterintuitive at play here: **in the age of the attention economy, “being talked about” is worth more than “being praised.”** Here’s how the transmission chain works: Someone watches the film and finds it truly terrible. They post a roast with screenshots. That roast itself becomes content because it offers novelty value: those who haven’t seen it think, “This can’t be real,” and click in. More people see the roast and decide to experience this outrageous thing for themselves. They watch it, then post their own roasts. And the cycle continues. _Niu Lai_’s box office wasn’t driven by word-of-mouth; it was **driven by mockery**. Everyone who cursed it was doing free promotion. Every share captioned “This is unbelievably bad” pushed it further into public view. The film itself was merely raw material for this viral game; the real product was the content ecosystem built around it. ## Was the Director Meme-ing or Being Earnest? Director Xin Yumeng’s 40-minute interview is an interesting text to examine. Judging from his statements, he was earnestly trying to make a film. The label “handmade entirely without AI” carries a defiant stance in 2026, when AI-generated content is ubiquitous. He wasn’t intentionally making a bad movie—at least not in his own mind. But **audiences no longer care about your original intent.** Once a work enters the internet’s discursive arena, its meaning is no longer defined by its creator. In the director’s hands, _Niu Lai_ was a creative work; in the audience’s hands, it became a meme; for commentary creators, it became a topic; for news outlets, it became a social phenomenon. Everyone is using it, but in entirely different ways. This raises a broader question: in an era where everyone has a voice, can creators still control what their work means? ## The Triumph of Abstract Culture The explosive popularity of _Niu Lai_ isn’t an isolated incident—it’s one ripple in the 2026 wave of abstract culture. Abstract culture, simply put, is **a systematic deconstruction of “seriousness.”** Traditional aesthetics say this is good, so I’ll insist that’s good instead. Mainstream narratives say this matters, so I’ll focus on what doesn’t. Not out of rebellion, but because in an age of information overload, “seriousness” has lost its filtering function. When everyone says the same movie is great, the word “great” loses its informational value. But “bad” is different. “Bad” is distinctive—it can be described, screenshotted, and turned into memes. “Bad” provides something scarce: **a shared punchline**. In an overseas viral post, someone wrote: “America had Food Fight, and now China has Niu Lai. It feels like people from both countries could exchange a knowing smile.” This captures a cross-cultural resonance: every generation needs its own “bad movie carnival” to affirm, “We’re all in this together.” ## The Sequel Is Already Here The sequel to _Niu Lai_, titled _Yang Gao_ (Sheep High), has already been officially announced. This may be the most alarming signal yet. If “bad film + roast-driven virality” proves to be a replicable path to box office success, then it’s no longer just one film’s triumph—it’s the establishment of a new production logic. Consider what this implies: when “being mocked” is more lucrative than “being praised,” who will spend three years polishing an animation that might earn “good reviews but no buzz”? When directors realize that “crudeness” itself is a selling point, will they still bother drawing each frame with care in their next project? The film industry has always followed the money. During Hollywood’s B-movie era, earnest filmmakers simply couldn’t survive. ## Back to Those Numbers Let’s return to the statistic from the beginning: videos roasting _Niu Lai_ have seventy times the views of serious discussions about it. These numbers aren’t really about _Niu Lai_. They reveal a defining truth of our era: **content’s value is no longer determined by the content itself, but by the density of secondary creations it spawns.** Whether a film is good or bad no longer matters; what matters is whether it can be discussed, consumed, and converted into material for the next short video. _Niu Lai_ crossed 100 million yuan. But what broke that record wasn’t the film—it was our era’s hunger for “something interesting,” even if that interest is built upon the ruins of a crude animation. ======================================================================== TITLE: DeepSeek Harness Installation Guide From Zero to Hero: A Step-by-Step Tutorial for Building AI Agents URL: https://eververdants.github.io/blog/deepseek-harness-installation-guide/ COLUMN: TUTORIALS DATE: 2026.08.20 TAGS: [DeepSeek, AI, Tutorial, Beginner] SUMMARY: A DeepSeek Harness installation tutorial designed for absolute beginners, covering everything from environment setup to the first run, with detailed instructions at every step. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > This is a tutorial tailored specifically for computer novices. Yet throughout history, we have repeatedly witnessed a paradox: a latecomer, absolutely inferior in troops, equipment, and resources, ultimately manages to overturn a colossus. Such reversals of power are never the result of luck, but of ruthlessly rigorous strategic reasoning. Today, let us return to the historical scene of over eighty years ago and reopen three classics written by Mao Zedong across three distinct periods. Let us see how, under those extreme circumstances where the enemy was strong and we were weak—when hope seemed all but extinguished—he dissected the problem step by step and turned the tide. ## I. On Contradiction — August 1937 To understand this work, we must first return to that historical juncture. The Red Army had just completed the Long March, and the bloody lessons of the failed Fifth Counter-Campaign against "Encirclement and Suppression" were still fresh in memory. Reflecting on the pain, why had we suffered such heavy losses time and again? The root cause lay in the decision-makers' blind faith in dogma, treating directives from the Comintern as sacred edicts and using foreign yardsticks to measure Chinese cloth—completely detached from China's realities. Thus, On Contradiction was born to thoroughly purge this erroneous thinking that ignored national conditions at its philosophical roots, addressing the question: "How exactly should we perceive reality?" So how do we perceive it? On Contradiction offers an incisive entry point: **distinguishing between internal and external causes**. The book contains this original passage: > "Materialist dialectics holds that external causes are the condition of change and internal causes are the basis of change; external causes operate through internal causes. An egg becomes a chick with appropriate temperature, but temperature cannot turn a stone into a chick, because their bases are fundamentally different." Where lies the cutting edge of this statement? Back then, when dogmatists lost battles, they always blamed the enemy for being too strong or conditions for being too poor—all external causes. But On Contradiction tells you: the external environment and the opponent's strength are merely the "temperature"; your own organizational structure, core capabilities, and popular support constitute the "basis." Treating external factors as the fundamental reason for defeat is the beginning of strategic miscalculation. The first lesson On Contradiction teaches us is to strip away external distractions and fix our gaze unwaveringly on the "**principal contradiction**" within things themselves. ## II. On Protracted War — May 1938 Having grasped the essence, how then do we fight? This brings us to the second book: On Protracted War, written in May 1938. It provides a roadmap for the transformation of power. By then, the War of Resistance had been fought for ten months, vast territories had fallen, and debates between the theories of "national subjugation" and "quick victory" raged fiercely. Mao did not take sides based on intuition; instead, he dissected four fundamental contradictions between China and Japan, deducing one conclusion: **China will not perish, nor can it win quickly**. The core methodology of On Protracted War is the **dimensional reduction of "power"** and the **extension of the timeline**. He divided power into **static factors** (weapons, economy) and **dynamic factors** (organizational capacity, popular will). Static factors may dominate in the short term, but dynamic factors transform over time. More crucially, he designed a three-stage pathway: **"strategic defense, strategic stalemate, and strategic counter-offensive."** Here lies a massive cognitive misconception: many assume protracted war means merely "enduring," a passive avoidance of battle. Wrong! What Mao emphasized was the **unity of "protracted strategy" and "quick decision in campaigns."** Maintain patience at the macro-strategic level, but at the micro-tactical level, seize the initiative relentlessly. Through **"offense within defense, quick decision within protraction,"** continuously create local advantages. This is how to tear open a turning point in the overall situation from within a passive position. ## III. A Single Spark Can Start a Prairie Fire — January 1930 With methods and pathways established, one final, most critical question remains: when the disparity in power is extreme and despair engulfs everyone, what gives you the conviction to trust your own judgment? This is the third book: A Single Spark Can Start a Prairie Fire, dated January 1930. It provides trend confirmation amidst desperation. At that time, the Great Revolution had failed, the revolution was at its lowest ebb, and confusion pervaded the Red Army: "How long can the red flag be flown?" In a cramped room in Gutian, Fujian, Mao penned this eight-thousand-character letter. Addressing doubts about the word "soon" in the phrase "the high tide of revolution is coming soon," he gave an extraordinarily clear answer: > "A Marxist is not a fortune teller. Regarding future developments and changes, one should and can only indicate the general direction; one should not and cannot mechanically fix specific dates." Rather than shouting hollow slogans, he offered three historically penetrating metaphors grounded in his analysis of the structural contradictions of Chinese society. He wrote that this is by no means something visible yet unattainable: > "It is like a ship whose masthead can already be seen from the shore gazing out to sea; it is like the morning sun whose radiant rays can already be seen bursting forth from atop a high mountain looking eastward; it is like a baby stirring in its mother's womb, nearly ready to be born." The methodology behind these three metaphors is this: the core of trend judgment lies not in predicting precise timing like a fortune teller, but in **confirming the inevitability of the general direction**. As long as the underlying structural logic holds, short-term fluctuations and setbacks are merely ripples in the course of history. ## Three Books, One Thread of Thought We have just walked through these three books following a problem-based logic. Now, let us reorder them chronologically, and you will discover a clearer line of intellectual evolution: - **A Single Spark Can Start a Prairie Fire** (1930): Piercing through the fog to discern the grand trend amid the迷茫 of revolutionary low tide; - **On Contradiction** (1937): Eradicating the disease of dogmatism from a philosophical height after painful reflection; - **On Protracted War** (1938): Deducing a strategic path to victory for the weak against the strong at a moment of existential peril. You will find that none of this was "theory-first" speculation conjured up in an ivory tower. It was a weapon of thought forged step by step through countless cruel combats and sacrifices—emerging from practice, returning to practice. This itself is the most vivid embodiment of "practice, knowledge, practice again, know again." Returning to our opening question: when an egg strikes a stone, must it always break? When you master this framework—**seeing through to the essence via internal and external causes, planning pathways through three stages, confirming trends through macro-structures**—you will realize that balances of power are never static. What breaks is not necessarily the egg. Indeed, you may no longer be a fragile egg at all. Which of these three works' methodologies inspires you the most? Share your thoughts in the comments below. ======================================================================== TITLE: Don't Rush to Work Hard: Get the Direction Right First URL: https://eververdants.github.io/blog/get-the-direction-right-first/ COLUMN: NOTES DATE: 2026.07.03 TAGS: [Mao Zedong, Methodology, Reading Notes] SUMMARY: Two methodologies from Mao Zedong's 1941 essay "Reform Our Study"—seeking truth from facts and having a clear target—and how they cut through modern confusion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Who hasn't experienced this? Your bookmarks are filled with dozens of posts on "overcoming confusion," and at 2 a.m. you're still frantically scrolling through your phone seeking answers. During the day, you sit at your desk with books spread out, feeling like you've given it your all. Yet, when you quiet down and ask yourself: What exactly am I striving for? Is all this effort even meaningful? You often find yourself speechless. What if I told you that your biggest problem isn't a lack of effort, but rather that you've turned **"effort" itself into a straw to clutch at**? Doesn't that sound a bit counterintuitive? ## The Debate in the Cave Dwelling Don't think this is far removed from our lives. In 1941, inside the cave dwellings of Yan'an, a group of revolutionaries debated fiercely over "how to correctly understand the world." This question may seem grand, but it is intimately relevant to everyone. Mao Zedong crystallized this debate into his essay "Reform Our Study," offering two methodologies that transcend time: **seeking truth from facts** and **having a clear target**. Today, they remain like a beacon, capable of piercing the fog of contemporary confusion. At the time, there was a typical phenomenon within the Party: some returned from studies in the Soviet Union able to recite Marxist-Leninist works backwards and forwards, quoting theoretical gems at every turn. Yet, when faced with China's complex realities, they were instantly helpless, becoming "headless flies." Mao sharply criticized this dogmatic tendency, pointing out that neglecting the integration of theory and practice turned theory into a castle in the air. His concept of "seeking truth from facts" was not merely an encouragement to work diligently; it emphasized exploring the underlying laws of the world. He stated: > "'Facts' are all things that exist objectively, 'truth' means their internal relations, i.e., the laws governing them, and 'to seek' means to study." Among these three concepts, **"to seek" is the soul**—without a spirit of active exploration, facts are merely scattered materials, and "truth" becomes nothing more than an empty slogan on the wall. ## Two Common Misinterpretations In reality, however, people often misunderstand "seeking truth from facts" in two major ways: First, equating it with **"working steadily,"** assuming that keeping one's head down and toiling away is synonymous with pursuing truth. But without looking at the direction, hard work may just be futile effort, **running south while driving north**; Second, reducing it to **"empiricism,"** applying ingrained perceptions to everything. But the "facts" Chairman Mao spoke of encompass all objective realities, not just the stale experiences residing in one's mind. ## Seeking Truth from Facts: A Three-Step Approach So how does one truly "seek truth from facts"? It takes just three steps: 1. **Ascertain the facts**: Lay out the current situation, data, and records before you. Replace feelings with facts. Don't rely on intuition to say "I can't do this"; instead, use evidence to analyze "where I fall short, by how much, and in what specific areas." 2. **Identify patterns**: Connect the facts to find recurring patterns, repeatedly asking "why." For instance, if failures are repeated, is it due to flawed methods, insufficient resources, or a deviation in direction? 3. **Define the problem**: Based on these patterns, precisely define the core contradiction. Instead of vaguely declaring "I want to get better," clearly state "I need to solve [specific problem] in [specific field]." ## Having a Clear Target After grasping the laws of reality, what's the next step? Many get stuck here: they understand the world but don't know how to change it. Mao provided the answer in the very same essay—having a clear target (literally, "having an object to shoot the arrow at"). He used a brilliant metaphor: > "The 'target' is the Chinese revolution, and the 'arrow' is Marxism-Leninism. We seek this 'arrow' precisely to hit the 'target' of the Chinese revolution." This attitude is **"having a clear target"**—using precise means to aim directly at a defined goal. Looking at the present day, this "broken link" is everywhere. The so-called "rat race" is often **"an arrow without a target"**—blind spinning that looks like desperate exertion but is actually **using tactical diligence to mask strategic laziness**, ultimately resulting in self-consumption. Conversely, "lying flat" is **"a target without an arrow"**—learned helplessness where one sees the bullseye clearly but surrenders because they cannot find the right "arrow." Both are essentially a disconnect between goals and means, leaving people spinning in place amidst anxiety and confusion. **Seeking truth from facts** is the eye that sees the world clearly; **having a clear target** is the weapon that changes it. Lacking either, one can only wander in the fog. This is not a denial of effort, but a rejection of "sleepwalking" diligence. Every ounce of exertion must be **"awake."** **For a ship without direction, no wind is favorable.** Only by first calibrating your course through "seeking truth from facts" and then hoisting your sails through "having a clear target" can effort gain the power to penetrate reality. ## Four Questions to Break the Deadlock Now, pick up a pen and paper, and write down these four key questions for breaking through: 1. **What are the core facts I am facing?** 2. **What hidden laws lie within them?** 3. **Where exactly is my bullseye (goal)?** 4. **What "arrow" (method) should I choose to hit it?** I await your thoughts in the comments. Perhaps, the moment you write down your answers, your direction will already be clear. ======================================================================== TITLE: The Grown-Ups Love Numbers — Notes on The Little Prince URL: https://eververdants.github.io/blog/little-prince-and-the-baobabs/ COLUMN: ESSAYS DATE: 2026.06.20 TAGS: [Literature, Reading Notes] SUMMARY: Grown-ups love figures — but how do you measure a flower, a star, a sheep? From chapter four to seven, one line runs through: the sickness, the cause, the loneliness, and the keeping. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Grown-ups love figures. — It is the sharpest cut in _The Little Prince_. Figures make us feel we have the world in our hands: age, weight, income, rank, follower count. But the Little Prince would ask: a flower, a star, a sheep — what figure do you measure them by? This is a reading note on _The Little Prince_, from chapter four to chapter seven, and through it all I see one line running: **how the grown-ups lose the world — and how we might keep our own.** ## The Sickness: How the Grown-Ups Lose the World Chapter four gives three scenes that are hard to laugh at. The Turkish astronomer discovered asteroid B-612 and reported it at a congress in his traditional costume — nobody believed him. In a European suit, the same report was accepted without question. For grown-ups, the standard of truth was never fact or evidence, but **who is speaking, and in what clothes.** When grown-ups describe a new friend, they don't ask about his voice, the games he plays, the butterflies he collects. They ask: how old? How many brothers? How much does he weigh? How much does his father earn? A living person is flattened into a row of comparable numbers. Numbers become the only currency for measuring value — understanding between people breaks, and loneliness begins. And then the saddest line of all: "Perhaps I am a little like the grown-ups. I have had to grow old." It is not a sigh about age. What aging means here is **losing the ability to see the sheep inside the box** — the loss of imagination and of the power to believe, and knowing it, clearly, about yourself. ## The Cause: Every Baobab Begins as a Seedling You Were Too Lazy to Pull Chapter five hands over the "cause" on the diagnosis sheet. On the Little Prince's planet, two kinds of seeds grow: useful radishes and roses — and baobabs. The trouble is that good and bad are too small to tell apart at first. A baobab is not a small flaw; it stands for whatever can **systematically destroy a life**: some addiction, a draining relationship, an obsession. It destroys in three steps: first it takes over all the space, until you have no room left for what is good; then its roots reach through your foundations and shake your core values; finally it bursts the whole planet apart. The most dangerous thing is never the sudden blow — it is **the daily neglect that looks harmless at first and takes everything back later.** So the Little Prince gives himself a rule of iron: **the moment you recognize one, pull it out at once.** And force yourself, every day, to do the weeding — a dull ritual, and the only preservative for the inner world. Keeping your inner world is never a one-time feat; it is a small daily insistence. The baobabs have changed their names today: the short-video app you open for "just a minute"; the relationship you "put up with for now"; the procrastination you keep putting off as "later." They all appear harmless, and quietly grow over the whole planet. ## Loneliness: Forty-Three Sunsets Chapter six is the lightest and heaviest chapter in the book. The Little Prince says his planet is so small that to see a sunset he only had to move his chair a few steps. He had seen forty-three sunsets. He said it in the perfect tense — he had really seen them all. And after seeing them, he fell silent. Why the silence? Because the sadness was too heavy for language to carry; and deeper still, he realized: **the man sitting in front of him could never truly understand him, his rose, or his volcanoes.** No matter how beautiful a sunset is, if no one truly understands why you love watching it — beauty itself becomes a burden. This is the feeling of loneliness. It is different from the sickness and the cause: even when you clearly know where the problem is, the loneliness cannot be dissolved. Some beauty is fated to be watched alone. ## The Root: Mushrooms and "Matters of Consequence" Chapter seven is where the root of loneliness finally shows itself. "I" was busy fixing the engine — a "matter of consequence" — and brushed off the Little Prince's painful question about his flower. The Little Prince did not get angry. He only said: "You talk just like the grown-ups. You mix everything up together." It is one of the harshest rebukes in the book. And the sharper metaphor comes right after: the grown-ups who repeat all day "I am a serious man" are, in the author's pen — **not men, but mushrooms**. No roots, no leaves, no flowers: no individuality, no vitality, no curiosity, love, or sorrow left — only a hollow self-inflation. "Matters of consequence" become the most respectable way to brush someone off, and the deepest wound to the heart is exactly this kind of brushing off. Busy, serious, earnest — three words that sound entirely correct can kill every question inside a person. ## Keeping: Don't Let the Inner Questioner Fall Silent Put the four chapters together and one complete line appears: the grown-ups are sick (chapter four) — the cause is letting the baobabs grow (chapter five) — in the sick world nobody understands beauty anymore (chapter six) — because mushrooms are everywhere (chapter seven). What the Little Prince is really asking is not how bad the grown-up world is, but: **in a world measured by figures and "matters of consequence," how do you keep your rose?** The answer the book gives is almost embarrassingly plain: like pulling baobabs, bend down once every day. Keep your curiosity, keep the impulse to ask "why," keep the self that falls silent for the sheep inside the box. When I finished chapter seven and wrote these notes, I suddenly understood: the fact that I can write this analysis means my own Little Prince is still here — and wide awake. I will keep recognizing those hollow, alienated voices — and keep my rose and my volcanoes safe. ** > *"Defy the gods."(违抗众神。) ### 1.2 安装 Node.js(Windows 用户) 1. 勾选 **"I accept the terms in the License Agreement"**(我接受许可条款),点击 Next 4. 确保 **"Automatically install the necessary tools"** 被勾选,然后点击 Next 6. 完成安装 #### 3.2 安装 SDK ```sh python -m pip install deepseek-harness-sdk ``` #### 3.3 创建测试脚本 用记事本创建一个文件,命名为 `test.py`,内容如下: ```python from deepseek_harness import DeepSeekHarness with DeepSeekHarness() as harness: result = harness.run("Say hello to the world.") print(result) ``` 然后在命令提示符中运行: ```sh python test.py ``` --- ## 第四步:配置和使用 启动后,你还需要配置 API Key 才能开始使用。
